Sri Vedapureeswarar temple was famed and widespread nearly 238 years ago was razed throughout a clash in 1748 (Aavani-28) so was rebuilt in 1788 by Diwan Kandappa Mudaliyar and with the public co-operation. The seventy-five feet king tower stands majestically at the doorway of the temple. The presiding god may be a swayambu Linga. Lord Muruga present in this temple is praised by Sri Ramalinga Swamigal in his hymns. It’s same that the presiding god was shifted to the present temple from the Mission Street Samba Easwaran Temple a hundred years ago.

There’s a special temple for Lord Dakshinamurthy inside this temple on the southern facet that is well known for his blessings in wealth for education. The Vedapureeswarar temple belongs to eighteenth century. The Lord grants mental peace to his devotees and visitors. As thanksgiving offers devotees do Abishegam to god with milk, tender coconut and various other materials that are denoted to do. They also feed devotees and visitor to this temple with prasadam as their thanksgiving to god. The historical name of this temple is said to be Vedapuri. Special poojas and homams are held during the festive days as per ancient Hindu tradition and culture in a grand way.

Secret facts about the temple

Sri Vedapureeswarar temple is located from in the western part of Pondicherry nearly 2 kms away from the Pondicherry sea shore. The main and miraculous thing in this temple is that lord Shiva is swayambu lingam in this temple that it was determined from the underground naturally without digging or searching for idol. Lord Shiva in this temple was naturally obtained from underground and then this big temple was built for him along with the idols in his family. At present temple is situated in Gandhi Street.

The timing of this temple is from morning 6.00am to 1.00 pm and in evening from 4.00 pm to 9.00 pm.
